Enhancing Regenerative Agroforestry at Pencedni Farm
Pencedni Farm is located south of Crymych and the Preseli Hills on the outskirts of the village of Glandwr in North Pembrokeshire. The smallholding exemplifies a growing interest in regenerative agriculture and the integration of trees into farming systems through agroforestry. Managed by Tom Clare and Jacqui Banks, the ten-acre smallholding has already established trees to complement its predominantly pasture-based system. This project builds upon this foundation, seeking to deepen the ecological understanding and practical application of agroforestry principles at the farm. This project will investigate the following elements:
The integration of diverse tree and shrub species in grazing systems offers potential benefits for animal nutrition through browsing, providing a wider range of nutrients and potentially bioactive compounds compared to pasture alone. Furthermore, “tree hay” offers a conserved forage option. However, a comprehensive understanding of the nutritional profiles of various species (including cultivars and non-natives), optimal harvesting methods, and their impact on biodiversity is needed. The impact of species choices on local biodiversity and ecosystem balance will be a key consideration throughout.
Mycorrhizal fungi play a crucial role in plant nutrient uptake and soil health, forming symbiotic relationships with plant roots. Investigating these interactions within the Pencedni Farm agroforestry system can provide insights into enhancing soil fertility and plant resilience.
Insect biomass is a vital component of healthy ecosystems, contributing to nutrient cycling, pollination, and providing a food source for other wildlife. Understanding the factors that influence insect populations within the agroforestry system and their role in soil fertility is essential for optimizing ecosystem function.
This project directly addresses the need for on-farm research to tailor agroforestry practices to specific contexts, such as the unique environment and management goals of Pencedni Farm. It aims to generate practical knowledge that can inform the farm’s future management decisions and contribute to the broader understanding of regenerative agroforestry in Wales.
The project will also contribute to the Sustainable Land Management outcomes including:
- Clean air
- Clean water
- High animal health & welfare
- Maximise carbon storage
- Mitigate flood & drought risk
- Protected natural landscapes
- Reduced GHG emissions
- Resilient ecosystems
