Conservation Grazing: Sustainable hill management with monil GPS collars for native cattle
The project plans to reintroduce cattle after a 20-year absence to combat the dominance of bracken and Molinia, which sheep grazing has failed to control on common ground. The project will utilise Monil GPS collars to manage the cattle's grazing patterns effectively on the common, improving both forage quality and habitat value for wildlife. Additionally, the collars will be trialled for winter bale grazing on enclosed land. The project will evaluate how to introduce cattle to a specific area of the common, and monitor grazing effectiveness against a control area to assess environmental improvements.
The project will also contribute to the Sustainable Land Management outcomes including:
- High Animal Health and Welfare
- Maximise carbon storage
- Protected natural landscapes
- Reduced GHG emissions
- Resilient ecosystems
- Resource efficient
