Can Sainfoin be grown on farms in Wales as an alternative crop to Lucerne?

This project is exploring Sainfoin as a high-protein, non-bloating, and naturally anthelmintic alternative to Lucerne, valuing its faster establishment, grazing tolerance, and lack of auto-toxicity. In early May, three fields will be planted with Sainfoin, undersown with a mixed species ley, using three different establishment methods: direct drilling, combi drilling, and an Alstrong Auctus pasture rejuvenator drill. The project will involve measuring growth and taking forage samples, with the crop being harvested 10-12 weeks after establishment.

The project will also contribute to the Sustainable Land Management outcomes including:

  • Clean air
  • Clean water
  • Maximise carbon storage
  • Mitigate flood & drought risk
  • Reduced GHG emissions
