Salary: £12.55-£12.86 per hour

Reporting to: Organic Poultry Manager/Owner

About Us:

We are a dedicated free-range organic poultry unit with 9,000 laying hens set on a working farm with 800 sheep, 150 beef calves and another 41,000 free range laying hens. We are committed to high standards of animal welfare, sustainability and the production of quality free-range eggs. Our 9000 organic free-range hens are housed across 3 mobile units, each with automatic systems powered by renewable energy. Derwydd Farm operates with a strong emphasis on ethical farming practices and with a conscious effort to reduce our environmental impact.

Job description:

We are seeking a reliable and hardworking individual to join our team. The role involves daily care of organic laying hens as well as egg collection, grading and packing. You will play a key role in ensuring the health and wellbeing of our birds and the high quality of our eggs.

Your role:

Hen welfare & husbandry

  • Daily checks on the flock to ensure health, welfare and safety
  • Monitoring feed, water, lighting, temperature and ventilation systems
  • Collecting and recording production data, mortality and feather scoring
  • Cleaning and maintaining poultry house and equipment
  • Assisting with veterinary treatments when required
  • Identifying any illnesses or abnormalities and reporting these to the manager

Egg handling

  • Sorting, grading, and packing eggs to high quality standards
  • Ensuring cleanliness and biosecurity during handling
  • Recording egg production figures

Farm maintenance

  • General cleaning and upkeep of the poultry unit
  • Assisting with minor repairs and maintenance of buildings/equipment
  • Maintaining biosecurity protocols at all times
  • Helping with shed muck outs, depopulations and settling in of new hens    

Requirements:

Essential

  • Passionate about upholding excellent welfare standards for the hens
  • Capable of handling hens with care
  • Physically fit and able to work in all weather conditions
  • Punctual, reliable, compassionate and able to work independently with use of own initiative when required as well as part of a small team
  • Willingness to work weekends and flexible hours as required
  • A clean driving licence
  • Have excellent time keeping and communication skills

Desirable

  • Previous experience working with poultry or on a farm
  • Some knowledge of organic and free-range farming practices
  • Some machinery experience (training will be provided)
