Focus Site Project: Antibiotic awareness project
Project aims:
- To reduce any unnecessary use of, and ensure responsible use of antibiotics on Welsh dairy farms.
- The project will gather data on drug purchases per year from a group of farmers, championed by the focus site farmer at Goldsland who will provide current and historic drug purchases. The data will highlight where and when antibiotics are being used on those farms. This will help focus farms on the area that is using the most antibiotics leading to talks with their vets in strategies to reduce this.
- All farms within the project will be benchmarked to allow a discussion of alternatives and strategies to reduce the need for their use, and also educate farmers on which type/generation of antibiotics they are using.
- The project well help to preserve the use of at risk antimicrobials for future generations whilst at the same time seeking to reduce the cost of producing a litre of milk and improve overall herd health and welfare.
