Overview:
The importance of peatlands in the Welsh landscape has become increasingly recognised.
• Peatland can store 30 times more carbon than a healthy tropical rainforest.
• Healthy peatlands can help reduce flooding. They act like sponges, absorbing water during high rainfall and steadily release it.
• Peatlands support rare and unique communities of wildlife, adapted to the wet and nutrient-poor conditions
• Peatlands are a valuable nature-based solution for climate on farmland.
Aim:
Enable farmers and other land managers to understand the options available to sustainably manage peatland on their farms.
Course delivery:
This 1-day course will combine indoor learning with a site visit. The course will be delivered by the team at RSPB Cymru, Lake Vyrnwy, who have been restoring peatland habitats for several decades. The peatland work at Lake Vyrnwy has been achieved within the farming system and the team wish to highlight how restoration can be very much a part of the farmed landscape, while also delivering a nature-based solution for the climate.
