Small Growers Standard

A Small Growers Standard has been developed by Malcolm Laidlaw, to provide assurance of produce to suppliers and consumers.

Through our involvement with the Welsh Veg in Schools project, co-ordinated by Food Sense Wales, we identified a need for a standard to be created and met by producers, that would assist the primary produce buyers as well as those further up the supply chain (the likes of Castell Howell and various local authorities). The standard provides due diligence that food being supplied is safe, fit for purpose and does not compromise the buyers accredited standards (such as BRC).

In 2023 the Small Growers Standard was developed and rolled out to growers in 2024. The uptake of the standard has increased significantly as growers and buyers are recognising how it can help framework best working practices, compliance with regulations and in turn can result in opening up further market opportunities.

The Small Growers Standard is offered through Farming Connect Horticulture to assist Commercial Welsh Growers. You do not need to be part of the Welsh Veg in Schools project to use the standard and it is a fully funded resource.
