Tyddyn Cae Project Update - April 2024
Milk Recording Protocols for Tyddyn Cae
- Monthly recording all year round would be the ‘gold standard’, but to keep costs down it can be done only at important periods of the year.
- All cows should have (at least) three recordings (one month apart) before drying off, with the last within 30 days of drying off.
- This is essential to minimise the risks of Selective Dry Cow Therapy (SDCT).
- All cows should have (at least) two recordings (one month apart) after calving, with the first within 30 days of calving.
- This is important for monitoring SDCT success.
- These will be the timings for Tyddyn Cae’s next calving block in 2024:
Selective Dry Cow Therapy Protocols for Tyddyn Cae
- It is recommended to take a cautious approach to selecting cows for sealant-only dry off.
- Cows should be less than 100,000 cells/ml on ALL of their last three recordings.
- Heifers should be less than 75,000 cells/ml on ALL of their last three recordings.
- Animals should have NO cases of mastitis in this lactation.
- Animals should be yielding less than 15 kg per day at time of dry off.
