Sectors:
Life sciences
Region:
Gwynedd

I’ve been self-employed for over 26 years, and I’ve always believed that you reap what you sow. I’ve studied microbiology and veterinary science, but I’ve never had any formal business qualifications.

Earlier in my career, I travelled the globe with racehorses, campaigning and advising on racehorse fitness. Over 80% are sick or lame when they run, and since all drugs are banned for them it became obvious to me that a natural legal alternative was needed.

It took dogged determination to start the business, but we’ve since won accolades such as the 2014 Bangor University Business Innovation Award, and we’re now aiming to be global leaders in our field.

Phytorigins is a Life Science Company that is developing a centre of excellence for Bioscience and the use of plant chemicals as medicine. Dr Carol Hughes has a wealth of experience in the microbiology and physiology of horses and has worked in the industry for 25 years researching into the use of British wild plant constituents for common animal conditions, particularly those related to obesity and inflammation.  Phytorigins collaborates with three Welsh universities and one Irish university.  Carol’s other company; ‘Superfix’ have developed herbal anti-inflammatory and gut supplements in conjunction with research in Newmarket. In 2013 they were the first company in Wales to apply for the Charter of Sustainability and in 2014 they won an Innovation Award for a project called Racehorses- Seasalt- Science.
