Moel Faban Suppers is a private and event catering company. We do secret suppers and pop-up café’s. I also write a Welsh food blog.

If you love what you do, put everything into it. Don’t be afraid to try things, just don’t over-stretch yourself. Be realistic about your business idea and do your research.

Denise Baker - Moel Faban Suppers

I initially intended to give it a go for a year to see if it would work, or until I got myself a ‘proper’ job. At the end of the first year I was invited to audition for Britain’s Best Dish and I was approached by Rachel’s Diary, a food blogger. I was also being asked to be a private chef for parties. I thought that there were many aspects of what I was doing that I could turn into a successful business, so in January 2011 Moel Faban Suppers was established.

I am regularly invited to give master classes and demonstrations at food festivals or as private classes and am currently on my next step which is to open my own cookery school teaching basic skills to those that have never learned cookery skills.

I love the flexibility of being my own boss, having the choice over what jobs I want to take. I’ve learnt that life is unpredictable, sometimes things are tough financially, especially when the food business is slow.

I was driven by my lack of success at school, being the one that would ‘never achieve anything’. Academically I worked hard but I struggled. Years later, while studying for my PhD I was told that I was dyslexic.

My business in two years has taken me from being an unemployed academic to a respected cook, food writer and supporter of local produce.
