Having studied Illustration at the University of Edinburgh I took a few years out and had lots of odd jobs before starting the company in early 2020. Since then I have loved every minute of being a freelance illustrator. Being my own boss gives me the freedom to do the work I enjoy, and the sky really is the limit. The scary bit is the uncertainty of not knowing if the work will continue but it’s one of those things you have to accept – after all you have to be in it to win it.

As well as offering a freelance service working on commissions, I also sell products I have designed such as notepads, prints, t-shirts, calendars and cards. My work has a Welsh flavour and I also have a passion for promoting mental health through my work. I have worked closely with Meddwl.org recently and I hope to continue to use my work to raise money for good causes.

Running my own business was a huge learning curve as my specialty is illustration, not business. The best thing I did was say yes to all the help out there. I was never the most confident or loud person but with time I have built my confidence and learnt to use my voice. There is so much free help available to start-ups, you just have to be pro-active and go find it. People are kind and they’re often happy to give advice if you ask. The more help you have, the higher your chances of succeeding, so don’t shy away and just go for it.

My top tip: “Whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right” – Henry Ford.
