I had worked in the dairy industry for over 20 years but I wanted to work for myself, so I set up Daffodil Foods. For the first time ever I worked the hours that I wanted, to fit around my children, and based myself in the ‘walk in wardrobe’ office at home. I did some research, bought a flask and taught myself to make yogurt. I designed a bespoke yogurt to meet the nutritional requirements of the Welsh NHS and attended some tendering courses and then tendered for my first NHS contract and won it. I then used that yogurt base to design a premium Welsh layered yogurt and sold the idea to Tesco and got it listed in Welsh stores. Since then I have worked with other customers and we now supply a range of cultured dairy products and desserts UK wide. Being your own boss is fantastic, but you are responsible for absolutely everything and so you need to be prepared to learn from your mistakes (and there will be many), pick yourself up and keep going.
