William John McFarland
Pembroke, Pembrokeshire
Originally from an urban background, new entrant Will McFarland’s journey into farming began when his family relocated to rural Shropshire. He studied Agriculture at Harper Adams University, took his first job in the dairy sector at 18 and has since forged a determined path through the industry, fuelled by passion and persistence. A year in New Zealand in 2009 cemented his preference for grass-based, spring-calving dairy systems - a model he now champions on his own farm.
Through employment, contract farming and strategic reinvestment, Will has built up both his expertise and equity. In 2019, he realised a long-held ambition by securing a 20-year Farm Business Tenancy in Pembrokeshire, where he now manages a 380-cow spring-calving dairy enterprise. His role includes day-to-day herd management alongside strengthening business efficiency and performance. Will is committed to building a business that is efficient, sustainable and profitable, while providing a positive work-life balance for all involved.
Passionate about economics, global markets, and his own continuous professional development journey, William’s other interests include rugby, travel and heavy horses.
“The experts, mentors and new networks I meet through the Agri Academy will help me better understand the challenges and opportunities facing our industry so that I can strategically plan for the future success of my business and contribute to a thriving agricultural sector.”
