Provider Profile
(An outline of the opportunity being provided)
Start to Farm Reference Number: 107
About the landowner:
65-74 years old
Welsh speaker
I am interested in conserving the wildlife and countryside. In the 15 years I have been here I have tried to farm with that in mind, Mum and I planted trees under the Glastir new woodland creation scheme, there is also mature broadleaf woodland here. I am also interested in conserving the old breeds of British livestock and belong to the RBST. Due to failing health and my grandson’s youth I am interested in having a young person with a similar outlook on life and farm along the same lines. I have 4 donkeys and a registered Welsh cob mare as I intended opening a type of care farm.
My goals for the next 5 years:
I want to hold on to the farm in case one of my grandsons shows an interest in carrying on.
Provide an opportunity to a young person who has the same interests as me.
Step back from the day to day running of the farm.
About the farm:
Land area available: approximately 60 acres / 24 Ha
Infrastructure available: For the right person there are crush handling yards, and some buildings that could be made available for either housing sheep or cattle.
Livestock available: 4 donkeys and 1 horse. Happy to increase livestock numbers.
Machinery available: Roller
Accommodation for the Seeker: No. The Seeker will need to find accommodation elsewhere.
The local area:
Pontyberem is a mining village with primary school, church and supermarkets with a frequent bus service to Carmarthen and Llanelli. It is heavily wooded and seeped in history, the Rebecca Rioters were very active in this area towards the end of the 19th century and they used to meet in the barn here and on Mynydd Sylen nearby.
