Dafydd Parry Jones, an approved Farming Connect mentor, farms the organic beef and sheep farm at Penegoes, Machynlleth where he was brought up.   His family bought the farm 25 years ago, transforming it from its previously poor state to a farm that in 2014 resulted in Dafydd winning the UK British Grassland Society Farmer of the Year.

He has developed the business significantly in terms of additional acreage, buildings and produce.  He carries out most of the work himself along with his young family, bringing in outside contractors to help with shearing, fencing and lime spreading.

An active member of his local community, Dafydd has been involved with numerous committees over the years including YFC Cymru, NFU Cymru, the Welsh Grassland Society, and Royal Welsh Agricultural Society.  He has also chaired his local agricultural show and the local community centre.  He regularly hosts events on the farm to raise money for different charities and during the last five years has welcomed various influential visitors.   Prince Charles, a Welsh Government minister, thousands of farmers, students, members of the public and numerous journalists and tv crews have all visited Maesllwyni!

“I have had the honour of sitting on many leading agricultural committees in Wales already but I am sure that being part of the Rural Leadership Programme will enable me to develop further as an individual and acquire the skills and knowledge to carry out any role or task I undertake professionally and to the highest standard.

“Effectively presenting new information to visitors, communities, influential individuals or voicing your opinion effectively in committees is a priceless skill to have to develop a leadership role.
