The impact of establishment method of herbal leys on productivity and soil health
This project will compare two methods for establishing a herbal ley in a 2-hectare field: ploughing versus direct drilling, both using Germinal Multi Species Grazing Mix. There will also be a comparison of a plot receiving an application of Calcifert and a plot receiving no application. Data collection will be comprehensive, focusing on germination rates, ground cover, weed presence and density, earthworm counts, water infiltration rates, and soil structure (VESS scores). Additionally, the project will assess the species composition of the ley and track all input costs, including fuel, labour, seed, fertiliser, and glyphosate. Stock exclusion cages will be used to facilitate accurate data collection.
The project will also contribute to the Sustainable Land Management outcomes including:
- Clean water
- Mitigate flood & drought risk
- Reduced GHG emissions
- Resilient ecosystems
- Resource efficient
