Llysiau Menai Project Update July 2024
- Grower trialled an initial Spring sowing of pak choi, chinese cabbage and calabrese. The seeds were sown into modules the last week of March and planted out into a polytunnel late April. The crop would have gone outside, but due to the wet, cold weather, there was a better chance of success in the polytunnel.
- First crop has been mainly successful, some varieties working well, others bolting. Understanding the varieties at this stage will help with the main crop over Summer and Autumn.
- The area for the main crop has been designed with 5 beds with an additional beneficial bed of wildflowers. A control bed has also been selected.
- Main crop will be sown successionally every 2 weeks from week 26 - 38. This will include pak choi, chinese cabbage, mooli and calabrese. The first sowing took place the last week of June.
- In addition to the main crop, spring onions and dill will be used as companion crops as well as a mustard trap crop.
- Using a quadrant, flea beetle damage will be measured by percentage of crop damage.
- The Grower is also recording crop yields, and notes on the success of specific varieties which will be useful for future planning.
