Lisa Powell and family, Caebanal

Powells Farm Wales is located in the beautiful Radnor Valley near New Radnor. Alongside her role as a Farming Connect development officer, Lisa, her husband, Haydn, and their three children, farm their upland beef and sheep farm. The Powell family have been farming here since 1974 and over the years they have added to the farm land to create a sustainable farm business in preparation for the next generation, rearing high welfare, grass-based beef and lamb. The Welsh Mule is crossed with a Texel or Suffolk ram to produce a quality finished lamb sold at the local livestock market. The Saler and Limousin cross cows are put to the Charolais bull and calves are reared as stores or finished depending on the market and feed prices. A wind turbine was installed in 2012 creating an additional income stream and then, in 2020, the farm diversified into Pick Your Own Pumpkins and a Spooktacular Farm Experience. The pumpkin picking experience continues to develop and bring something new for visitors each year. Different ideas have been trialled over recent years and the next project is to set up a glamping site with Bell tents and to allow visitors to immerse themselves in a working farm experience.

Laura Warren

Lisa will also be joined by a close friend and fellow female farmer, Laura Warren. Laura farms full-time with her husband on a small holding near Presteigne, on the edge of the Radnor Forest. The main focus of the farm is calf rearing alongside a small flock of sheep that includes a registered flock of Black Welsh Mountain Sheep, and a shepherd’s hut holiday let. Calf rearing was introduced to the farm in 2020 using the Holm & Laue bucket system. Calves arrive on farm from 3 weeks old and leave as weanlings at 4/5 months old. Most calves are dairy cross and are on a contract. Day to day tasks can include feeding milk, bedding down, vaccinating, weighing, TB testing and castrations with the vet.

Kayleigh Rees-Jones and Family – The Wholehouse

There is a whole lot of fun, love and freedom at The Wholehouse. Experience a business in the heart of Bannau Brycheiniog where both family and sustainability are deep-rooted. Kayleigh and her family run a Regenerative sheep farm and decided to diversify in 2021. Alongside the farm, they now offer luxury holiday accommodation, an exclusive wedding venue, and an epic dog walking adventure playground.

Brynich Barns

Brynich is a small family run business, which has been in the Jones family since 1966, starting life as a family farm and evolving over the years to the business you see today. Brother and sister, Mark and Cath, still own and run Brynich with Mark’s wife, Becca, and a team of dedicated staff. The Barn can be booked for weddings, functions, meetings and retreats. We also offer stunning accommodation in our self-catering cottages, with plenty of outside space in an idyllic setting. At Brynich we try to minimise our impact on the environment and make every effort to manage our land in a way that protects our biodiversity. At the end of 2020 we planted 10,000 trees on the farm to improve habitat for wildlife.

Cascave Gin

Cascave Gin, a family enterprise at its core, was born over a G&T (what else?). Founded by a mother and two daughters with an aim to craft an experience that captures the very essence of the Brecon Beacons, Cascave Gin is located on a working organic beef and sheep family farm near Brecon. Cascave’s portfolio currently includes three gins: The Premium Dry Gin and the Cave-Aged Gin and more recently their new Stormy Gin. As well as the gin, the Davies family also have a range of tourism properties from eco lodges, barn conversions and traditional Welsh farmhouses based on the farm.
