Cwmcowddu Project Update - July 2024
A thorough analysis of soil samples from both grazing and silage fields has been conducted. This analysis will provide essential information on the nutrient profiles of these fields, allowing for targeted and efficient manure application. In parallel, poultry manure samples have been analysed to determine their nutrient content and potential value as a fertiliser.
Next steps?
The project is currently in the development phase, with the focus on translating the data collected into actionable plans. This includes the creation of bespoke Nutrient Management Plans (NMPs) for two participating farms. These NMPs will outline a tailored approach for each farm, considering their unique soil characteristics, stocking rates, and manure availability. The plans will be shared with the farmers in June 2024, who will then have the opportunity to provide feedback and ensure the recommendations align with their practical operations.
Beyond creating tailored NMPs, this project aims to address a broader range of questions related to integrating poultry manure into grassland systems. This includes:
Developing a long-term plan for poultry manure application timing and location to maximise nutrient uptake and minimise environmental impact.
Formulating a revised dairy slurry application plan at Cwmcowddu, taking into account new CoAP regulations and the soil indices of fields adjacent to the farmyard.
Identifying the most cost-effective fertiliser options to supplement any remaining nutrient deficiencies after utilising home-produced manures.
Reviewing current poultry manure storage practices and identifying best practices that align with CoAP regulations.
Conducting a cost-benefit analysis of drying and composting poultry manure as potential alternative management strategies.
