Comparing lamb performance on leys and willow

This project investigates whether willow can be a natural, cost-effective solution for cobalt deficiency in weaned lambs on welsh farms. Cobalt deficiency is a known issue for many coastal flocks, leading to poor growth and requiring expensive supplements like boluses and drenches.

The project will compare four different grazing systems for weaned lambs:

  • Multi-species herbal ley
  • Multi-species herbal ley with additional willow#
  • Perennial ley (your current system)
  • Perennial ley with additional willow

Why willow? Willow leaves are not only rich in cobalt but also highly palatable to lambs. We hope that by incorporating willow, we can eliminate the need for costly cobalt supplements, saving you time and money, and promoting healthier lamb growth more naturally.

We're also interested in seeing how multi-species leys compare to perennial leys in terms of lamb health and production, and which type of ley, if any, works best when combined with willow.

Beyond lamb performance, we'll monitor faecal egg counts and blood mineral analysis to get a full picture of lamb health.

The project will also contribute to the Sustainable Land Management outcomes including:

  • High animal health & welfare
  • Protected natural landscapes
  • Reduced GHG emissions
  • Resource efficient
  • Resilient Ecosystem
