Harnessing cutting edge technology for breeding values in beef cattle could help produce more carcases that meet optimum specification and increase returns for farmers.

Join Farming Connect at an open day on one of its Focus Sites to find out more about utilising Genomic Breeding Values (GEBV’s) in the beef sector. A difference in retail value of around £100 -£150 per carcase has been identified between progeny from a high GEBV sire and progeny from low GEBV sires (Meat Prices Index).

Alison Glasgow, Technical Director of the British Limousin Cattle Society will discuss the development and application of new carcase trait technology, and the DNA testing results of 40 animals in the pedigree Limousin herd will be presented and compared against the Limousin SNP key for:

  • Carcase weight GEBV
  • Age to slaughter GEBV
  • Retail value GEBV
  • Six individual carcase cuts GEBV’s
  • Myostatin (double muscling) variants

Correlations between Myostatin, carcase qualities and calving ease will also be explored and there will be an opportunity to view animals carrying different trait combinations.
