Trial of LoRaWAN and nofence in extensive cattle grazing systems
This project aims to address the challenges of extensive cattle grazing, particularly in upland areas, by leveraging LoRaWAN technology for remote animal monitoring. The project will integrate Nofence technology's animal behaviour and boundary data with LoRaWAN's health and location monitoring. Ultimately, by finding solutions for large-scale, profitable, and welfare-centric extensive cattle management, this could lead to the return of more cattle to uplands, increased conservation grazing, and improved biodiversity and soil health through regenerative agricultural practices.
The project will also contribute to the Sustainable Land Management outcomes including:
- High AHW
- Maximise carbon storage
- Protected natural landscapes
- Reduced GHG emissions
- Resilient ecosystems
- Resource efficient
