Farmers are invited to find out more about different management options for their livestock this winter during an open event at one of Farming Connect’s demonstration farms.

The event will highlight the farming system at Rhiwgriafol, Talywern, Machynlleth, including developing a reseeding programme and improving utilisation of grassland. A project looking into the practicalities of outwintering ewes on swedes is currently running at Rhiwgriafol, with crop establishment and the potential for winter feeding also up for discussion.

"Swedes are up to 18% dry matter and have a digestibility of over 80%," said Lisa Roberts, Farming Connect Red Meat Technical Officer. "This makes them more digestible than grass and a cheap feed source, with swedes costing around £62/tonne and grass/clover costing £72/tonne utilised dry matter."

Grassland expert Charlie Morgan will be joined by local vet Rhian Davies, who will discuss ways to tackle lameness within the flock. Another aspect of the business is a heifer rearing enterprise where 52 heifers are managed until they reach 18 months of age as an additional source of income for the farm.
