Straw remains the most commonly used bedding material for housed ewes, however as its cost continues to increase significantly, and its availability decreases, farmers are turning to alternative options. Hendre Ifan Goch (a Farming Connect demonstration site) have recently installed slatted flooring as an alternative bedding option to straw.
Join Farming Connect, demonstration farmer Rhys Edwards Hendre Ifan Goch, independent beef and sheep consultant Liz Genever and vet Tom Searle, from South Wales Farm Vets to discuss the following;
- The lambing system at Hendre Ifan Goch, and the ‘top tips’ for a successful lambing.
- Are slatted floors a viable alternative option to straw for housing ewes?
- Trial results comparing 5 different bedding option pre-lambing (barley straw, wheat straw, sawdust, EnviroBed and slatted flooring).
