Focus Site Project: Utilising alternative pig feeds to improve profitability, performance and reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Project aims:

  • The aim of the project is to reduce the days to slaughter in rare pig breeds through means of utilising local alternative feed sources.
  • Alternative feed options will be explored to construct the most suitable diet for slow maturing rare breed pigs with the aim to achieve slaughter weight in finisher pigs quicker and therefore reduce environmental impact.
  • Feed intake and live weight gain will be compared against the previous feeding regime to identify any benefits from using the formulised ration.
  • The results will show the value of alternative feeds and how they can be incorporated into a pig diet.
