Focus Site Project: Oestrus synchronisation in commercial beef cattle

Project aims:

  • AI insemination is a tool that provides an affordable way for farmers to access superior genetics
  • Farmers also have the ability to synchronise their cattle to inseminate a certain number of animals at a pre-determined time, thus lowering labour costs and possibly increasing conception rates.
  • The aim of this project will be to demonstrate efficient beef production through the use of oestrus synchronisation and high genetic merit bulls.
  • It is believed that the combination of a tight calving pattern, and use of AI will result in lower production costs and increased profits due to increased weight of weaned beef per cow.
