Project introduction - Fedw Arian Uchaf

Geraint and his wife Rachael farm 384 hectares of mountain land reaching up to 2,200 feet above sea level and a further 101 hectares of productive grassland, which lies approximately 900 feet above sea level. They keep a 1,000 breeding ewes, 200 replacements and 50 suckler cows. An organic farm since 2005, it has been in the Glastir Entry scheme since 2013 and in the Glastir Advance scheme since 2014.

Geraint and Rachael work closely with many environmental bodies to ensure a thriving wildlife and rare bird population on their land whilst also producing red meat. They strongly emphasise that food can be produced whilst maintaining and conserving the natural environment, they are not mutually exclusive.

Geraint hopes to grow his farm business and improve the quality of what he produces. In doing this, making the most of productive land on their farm is vitally important as for all hill farmers across Wales. Achieving high yields and quality from lower ground is key to carry livestock from spring grazing through to silage cutting and finishing lambs. However, identifying less productive areas and exploring alternative options such as tree planting to create additional habitats and shelter for livestock is as important.
