This module highlights the importance of animal welfare (both for the animals themselves and the farmers) and ways in which to improve it. As keepers of livestock, farmers have a duty of care to their animals. Research over the decades has proved that animals are sentient beings just like us and their needs must be met for them to live fulfilling lives. On-farm animal welfare is regulated across the UK by the Animal Welfare Act  which came into force in 2007.
