Focus Site Project: Comparing different methods of trace elements supplementation for improved lamb growth

Project Objectives:

The main aim of this project is to compare the daily liveweight gain (DLWG) of lambs supplemented with different forms of trace elements (bolus vs drench).  Across the UK there is limited data on the most appropriate and cost-effective way to supplement trace elements in growing lambs.  There are several products available on the market, but on-farm data to back up claims by some products is limited.  Farmers generally purchase trace element supplements on sales/marketing material rather than on evidence-based trials.

  1. Assess the effectiveness of three different modes of supplementing lambs with trace elements (2 different boluses vs drench) by looking at their weight gain.
  2. Provide good evidence for making informed decisions when advising farmers on how to prevent trace element deficiency through supplementation.
  3. Improve long-term lamb welfare and economic growth by preventing trace element deficiencies.

Key Performance Indicators Set:

  1. Increased DLWG
  2. Reduce days to slaughter
  3. Improve overall health and welfare of lambs
