Red meat from Wales is enjoyed by consumers throughout the world, and is a hugely important part of our food and drink economy. This multi-million pound industry supports tens of thousands of jobs, with a massive one-third of all Welsh lamb and beef production being exported around the world.
Profitable, efficient, sustainable, innovative
Our aim is to make this important, high-earning industry still more profitable, efficient, sustainable and innovative. An overall value of more than £1 billion a year to the Welsh economy reflects the financial benefits of the Welsh lamb, beef and pork industry and the 50,000 jobs it supports. Exports are paramount, as Wales consumes only 5% of the red meat it produces. Lamb and beef exports account for some one third of all sales, and were worth more than £224 million in 2013.
Promoting and growing the industry
Welsh lamb and beef enjoy Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status, which is of enormous economic importance to the industry as it identifies the unique origin and qualities of the product.
The industry-led body Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales works with the Welsh Government and is responsible for development, promotion and marketing of Welsh red meat products. A Strategic Action Plan identifies strategic objectives, actions and outcomes for the industry, while a Road Map advises stakeholders on environment, carbon reduction, and increasing efficiency and profitability.
