International journalists from 60 countries were invited to sample the very best of Welsh food and drink at a special Welsh Government-supported event at Tredegar House, Newport, for the world’s media during their stay for the NATO summit last night.

Guests enjoyed local produce from a hot buffet, as well as a demonstration bar and kitchen. Chefs prepared canapés for the evening using the freshest ingredients, which were offered whilst guests networked, and a Welsh food and drink showcase and sampling area, highlighted the unique products available in Wales.

Food during the evening was prepared by the Welsh Culinary Association and Hybu Cig Cymru chef, Elwen Roberts, in a self contained kitchen located within the event marquee, whilst SA Brain and numerous drinks producers supplied the bar.

Products from 60 different Welsh producers, including meats, dairy products, baked goods and seafoods, were showcased at the event, giving them the opportunity to be promoted globally. Representatives from 19 of these producers attended, bringing their products ranging from traditional Welsh favourites such as Welsh cakes and laverbread, to seasonal fruit and vegetables, and locally-caught seafood.

Not only was the evening showcasing the best of Welsh food and drink to international representatives, but it also informed the guests on the importance of the food and drink industry to the Welsh economy.

Minister for Economy, Science and Transport, Edwina Hart said:

“The eyes of the world have been on Wales this week as we have welcomed  NATO leaders, as well as 1,500 international journalists, to Newport and Cardiff.  The reception for NATO media at Tredegar House gave us a global platform, to enable us to showcase some of the remarkable range of highly innovative, quality food and drink products that Wales has to offer.

“Such events are part of our ambitious strategy to grow the food and drink sector by working with the industry to sustainably increase output by 30%, which will further help to raise the profile and reputation of Welsh food and drink to the international market.”
