Nathan Richards
Nathan is an established and respected organic grower, based in Wales. He has extensive experience in horticulture production, including mixed top and soft fruit, from over 17 years of working as an organic grower in the UK. Nathan and his wife, Alicia Miller, are the owners of Troed y Rhiw Organics, a family-run Soil Association certified organic farm in Llwyndafydd, Wales. The business is committed to farming sustainably, with a whole farm holistic approach to food production, encompassing everything from the microbial worlds within the soil, to the role that the farm has within the local community. It is a mixed farm with a herd of Highland cattle, Welsh pigs, and chickens, which contribute to the farm’s fertility and provide meat for their family and customers. They produce a wide range of vegetables, herbs, soft fruit, and flowers sold through a local box scheme, and at local markets, restaurants, and health-food stores. Staying local means their food is fresh, mostly picked and sold on the same day.
Prior to starting up Troed y Rhiw Organics, Nathan was head grower at Warborne Farm, Lymington, New Forest, an award winning mixed organic farm. While at Warborne, Nathan was also a major contributor to a 13 episode television series ‘A Farm Life’ for the Discovery Channel, which aired in 2008. Nathan previously sat on the steering group for the Soil Association's Future Grower Scheme as well as the Soil Association Farmer and Grower Board and has written for The Organic Grower and other publications. Before this career Nathan spent twenty years as a commercial film maker which brings a significant knowledge of marketing and creative thinking. He describes himself as a “Wild dream realizer, optimist, careful planner, fixer of tractors and machines, problem solver, creative thinker, loud whistler and floral shirt wearer.”
