Renowned chef spearheads a ‘Taste of Wales’

Welsh food and drink producers will be heading to London next week to celebrate Dydd Gŵyl Dewi - St David’s Day at some of London’s most prestigious retail stores.

Award winning Welsh chef and restaurateur Bryn Williams will lead the ‘Taste of Wales’ campaign in London, which runs from Saturday 27th February until St David’s Day on Tuesday 1st March. This will see top Welsh food and drink producers showcasing the fabulous products that are available to retailers such as Fortnum & Mason, John Lewis and Partridges.

Deputy Minister for Farming and Food, Rebecca Evans said, “It is great to see our food and drink producers promoting Wales and their fine products in London over St David’s Day.  Our Trade Development Programme has enabled these producers to gain access to London retailers, and as a Government we continue to support our producers and see them succeed.  Having Bryn at the forefront of promoting our top quality products in London is great as we have such a fine array in Wales.

“Welsh producers will be in London over the weekend and up to St David’s Day showcasing their fabulous products. It is a vitally important sector for the Welsh economy so it is very appropriate that Welsh food and drink takes centre stage on our national day of celebration.”

Bryn Williams, whose cooking career began in the most acclaimed kitchens in London and now owns and runs his own restaurant, will be promoting Welsh food and drink produce by attending some of London’s top stores to sing their praises.

Hailing from North Wales, Bryn is a great ambassador of Welsh produce and has nearly 20 years’ experience in the fine dining industry which he constantly draws upon as the Chef Patron of Odette’s in Primrose Hill, London.

Bryn, talking about Welsh food and drink explains, “We have some of the best produce in the world and it is great to see so much of it available in the city’s stores. Growing up in Wales I learnt to appreciate food and its origins from an early age. I would go shooting and fishing with my father and uncle and worked in his local bakery learning the trade. From this point onwards I knew that cooking was integral to my future. I use top quality fresh produce in my cooking and of course anything from Wales which can travel is a winner in my book.”

St David, the patron Saint of Wales, is celebrated all over the World on the 1st March and is an important part of the heritage of Wales, as is food and drink, which is one of the Welsh Government’s priority sectors.
